Major EU Blue Card Reforms
Germany has made significant changes to the EU Blue Card directive in 2026, making it easier than ever for skilled professionals to work and settle in Germany.
Lower Salary Thresholds
The minimum salary requirement has been reduced to €41,042 for shortage occupations (previously €43,800) and €45,300 for standard occupations. This opens the door for more mid-career professionals.
Expanded Shortage List
The official shortage occupation list now includes additional IT roles, healthcare positions, renewable energy specialists, and skilled trades workers.
Faster Permanent Residency
Blue Card holders with B1 German can now apply for settlement permits after just 21 months (down from 33 months). Those with A1 German can apply after 27 months.
Family Benefits
Spouses of Blue Card holders now receive immediate work authorization without a separate work permit application — a major quality-of-life improvement.
